NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday slammed the PM Modi led BJP government over unemployment and alleged that its policies had weakened the path from education to employment for young Indians.In a post on X, Kharge cited Niti Aayog and PLFS figures to claim that 8.7 crore Indians aged 15 to 29 are neither in education, employment nor training, while youth unemployment stands at 15.6%.Kharge said the unemployment rate among young women was 19.5%, and questioned the government over job creation, the employment situation among graduates and its earlier promise of creating 2 crore jobs every year.Kharge claimed that graduates account for 67% of unemployed Indians aged 20 to 29, while unemployment among graduates aged 15 to 25 is nearly 40%.He said families were spending their savings and students were taking education loans to obtain degrees, only to find that sufficient employment opportunities were unavailable.“Where are the jobs after graduation?” Kharge asked, questioning PM Modi over the employment prospects of young Indians.He also questioned the government over its earlier promise of creating 2 crore jobs every year.“What happened to the promise of 2 crore jobs every year?” Kharge said, adding that the promise would have translated into 24 crore jobs over 12 years.Kharge alleged that lakhs of government posts remained vacant while secure employment was increasingly being replaced by contractual and part-time work.He also blamed expensive and inadequate education, examination paper leaks, delays in recruitment, a widening skills gap and a shortage of quality jobs for putting young people’s future at risk.

“Who is turning India’s demographic dividend into a demographic disaster?” Kharge asked.He further accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises despite PM Modi’s claim that his government would achieve what previous governments could not accomplish in 70 years.“You, Modi ji, promised to achieve what previous governments could not do in 70 years!”Kharge concluded by attacking the government’s education policies, examination system and employment outcomes.“You have certainly delivered on that boast: an Education system that costs more, infested with RSS, examinations young Indians cannot trust, and degrees that increasingly come without jobs.”
